The Artist - Simon Connett SWS
Working primarily in mild steel, with occasional use of copper and bronze, I use a blend of traditional blacksmithing techniques and contemporary metalworking processes. I’m drawn to the surface qualities that come from forging — the texture, patina and character created by heat, hammer and time. The marks left by the process become part of the finished piece, revealing its making and material honesty. My work is inspired by the landscape surrounding my workshop on an old dairy farm in East Devon. It’s a place where nature is steadily reclaiming the manmade — ivy climbing walls, ferns breaking through concrete, swallows nesting in the rafters. These quiet transformations influence the forms and themes within my sculpture. Each piece is an abstraction of natural growth and movement, reflecting the resilience, beauty and delicate persistence of the natural world.
