The Artist - Nigel Grist
Nigel Grist is a printmaker working in linocut, collagraph, drypoint and etching. In some images techniques are combined, e.g. drypoint and Collagraph. Some pieces incorporate multiple layers using chine collé. Originally a biologist, programmer and now a Dartmoor guide, various experiences influence his subject matter and images.
There may be a floral or faunal component but often a degree of abstraction and imagination, perhaps inspired by microscopic examination of cellular features or marine invertebrates. At another scale landscape is often present at some level; literally, in the case of Dartmoor. A short walk can lead to encounters with features from the Bronze Age, mediaeval and Victorian periods all within an ancient granite landscape. A constant goal is to represent layers of history: hidden and unseen, or visible but less obvious. Rather than precise representation he tries to reflect this layering while capturing the character, essence or ‘feel’ of a place.
